When rumblings began to arise that HBO’s Bitcoin documentary, Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, would finally reveal the identity of BTC creator Satoshi Nakamoto, the entire crypto world was interested. The widely respected television and film network was set to uncover one of the greatest mysteries in finance. Yet, that has proven to not necessarily be the case.
The documentary makes the claim that Peter Todd is the man behind the pseudonym. Moreover, they claim that Todd is responsible for the creation of the greatest digital finance revolution in history. However, the timeline does not bear out HBO’s assertions. Moreover, it looks as though the documentary itself got a few things wrong after all.

Money Electric: Everything the HBO Doc Gets Wrong About Bitcoin and Satoshi
The new HBO documentary Money Electric was set to completely shift how we perceived Bitcoin and its impact. More importantly, it was set to uncover a mystery that has been held since 2009; Who is BTC creator Satoshi Nakamoto?
The claim intrigued many, as it remains a prevailing and unprecedented mystery. Yet, many also remained skeptical that the assertion would be proven out through the documentary’s findings. When the dust settled, the documentary claimed that Peter Todd was the creator of the revolutionary digital currency.

In response, Todd vehemently denied the claim. The question now is regarding whether or not he’s telling the truth. However, digging a little deeper shows that Money Electric missed the mark on more than one occasion when telling the story of the leading cryptocurrency.

The central claim of the program is that Todd did indeed create Bitcoin under the Satoshi pseudonym. However, his own personal history does place that claim in question. Specifically, because Bitcoin was launched in 2008. At that time, Todd was still studying to earn a degree in fine arts.
Although he was interested in cryptography, his participation in the sector had not begun with the birth of the asset. Todd has publicly stated that his own work on Bitcoin didn’t start until six years later.
The claim is rooted in Todd’s own remark given to HBO. In the program, he states clearly, “Oh, no, I am Satoshi. I’m Satoshi Nakamoto.” This statement, connected to the idea that we are all Satoshi, was ran with by HBO producers. Moreover, it was used as the proof for the theory.

Another avenue for HBO to insist on its theory is the Bitcoin Talk online forum. Specifically, a 2010 post that was made by Todd, but was also supposedly posted to the wrong account. Indeed, the documentary producers claim the post was supposed to have been made by Satoshi himself.
“Satoshi’s last post was one week after I signed up for BitcoinTalk,” Todd said. “But then I disappeared,” he added. Although he made the statement noting the coincidence, the suspicion was evident by the programming.
Todd’s Defense & Missing the Point

Throughout the documentary, Todd assures that he is not Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto. Yet, he does so in ways that seemingly only push HBO further down the rabbit hole. “Of course I’m Satoshi, and I’m Craig Wright,” he says at one point in the documentary.
This is a reference to the man who previously claimed to be Satoshi, Craig Wright. For anyone with insight into the industry, this is a clear sign of the lunacy for which Todd is observing these allegations.
“It’s going to be yet another example of journalists missing the point in a way that’s very funny,” Todd said. “The point is to make Bitcoin the global currency, and people like you, being distracted by nonsense, can potentially do good on that.”
Ultimately, Todd notes that the theory was “pretty creative.” Moreover, he stated that the implication of him being Satoshi was “ludicrous.” In the end, he says the documentary would be a funny attempt at uncovering the great mystery of “a bunch of Bitcoiners.”
